The company is offering the most in depth cruises in Alaska in the summer and is a floating university for the rest of the year (the University of Pittsburgh "Semester at Sea" program). Passengers are mature, well educated travelers, interested in a cultural travel experience and focused on learning about the destinations they visit.

SS Universe Explorer began life in 1958 as the SS Brasil of Moore McCormack Lines, making 14 day trips from New York to South America. She was bought by Holland America in 1971 and sailed for at least 5 other cruise lines before becoming the flagship of World Explorer Cruises.
