Firefighter Job Description and Duties:


Cruise ship fire fighting team

A fire is the major safety threat aboard a cruise ship. Cruise lines hire a professional Fireman as a leader and coordinator of the Fire-fighting Team aboard the ship. The team consist of 3-4 firefighting parties (groups), approximately 10 members each - mostly from the deck and engine departments - plumbers, electricians, fitters, able seamen, cadets. Although all members receive an extensive fire-fighting and fire prevention training, this is not their main duty aboard the vessel. Apart of the fire-fighting team, each crew member receives a basic fire fighting training and in case of discovering a fire must immediately alert the bridge and be able to apply basic firefighting techniques until arrival of the firefighting team. The main duties and responsibilities of the dedicated professional Fireman aboard a cruise ship include, but are not limited to:

- Reports to the Safety Officer and to the Staff Captain

- Fire-fighting team leader

- Responsible for the maintenance and proper functioning of all fire fighting equipment aboard the vessel

- Responses also to medical emergencies and provides first aid until arrival of a dedicated medical officer

- Prepares the fire drill and training of ship's firefighting parties and in conjunction with the Safety Officer prepares the weekly familiarization and safety meetings for all sign on crew

- Conducts the fire prevention and fire fighting familiarization training of all joining crew members

- Enters fire training and drills into the logbook

- Ensure that all fire-extinguishing appliances (both stationary or portable) are in accordance with the regulations and available for immediate use

- Ensures that the maintenance of all deck equipment is in accordance with the safety regulations in regards to fire hazards including the ship's tenders, lifeboats and rescue boats

- Evaluates and prevents potential fire hazards in order to improve the ship's fire prevention and control standards

- Conducts crew cabin inspections (crew rounds) as required by the Staff Captain



Cruise Ship Fireman Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience as a professional firefighter

  • Must hold all appropriate national fire-fighting certificates

  • Previous experience aboard passenger vessel is a plus, but not mandatory

  • Coaching, decision making and team building skills

  • Very ood verbal and written command of the English language

  • Ability to work in multicultural environment


Firefighter Salary Range:


$4900 to 5700 U.S. per month and up depending on the cruise line and time served with the company.
