This unusual cruse line used to be a division of Holland America Line and originally owned by Carnival Carnival Corporation & plc. Carnival sold Windstar Cruises to Ambassadors International in March 2007 for $100 million. In April, 2011, Windstar's parent company Ambassadors International filled for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and Windstar was planned to be sold to a company in White Plains, New York known as Whippoorwill Associates, Inc. But through a Bankruptcy court in Delaware, a two day bid was held and Anschutz Corporation won Windstar Cruises which had the best bid of $39 Million. Subsidiary Xanterra Parks and Resorts is now the parent company.

It was announced on February 19, 2013 that Windstar completed the purchase of Seabourn Cruise Line's Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Legend, Seabourn Spirit. The Star Pride entered service in May 2014 with an inaugural cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Sister ships Seabourn Legend and Seabourn Spirit (renamed Star Legend and Star Breeze) entered service in May 2015 following a dry dock period.

Windstar Cruises are offering a deluxe combination of sailing ship romance and the comfort and amenities of a cruise ship. The itineraries are also a combination of popular ports and off-the-beaten-track places. Passengers are from all ages, international collection of Europeans, Latin Americans and North Americans. They could have a different income, but they all share a common lifestyle - active, affluent individualists, who would rather not go for the mainstream cruise ship experience. Windstar Cruises sleek masted sailing ships with computer-directed sails, offer the perfect balance of sophisticated pampering, exceptional service, luxurious amenities amidst an oh-so-casual atmosphere. Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf carry between 148 and 312 passengers, in spacious modern staterooms and suites. Passenger to crew ratios are a very high 1.5 to 1, and the superb level personalized service is the result. Passengers tend to be somewhat younger and more highly educated than on most cruises because of the unusual ports and variety of hard and soft adventure.

A great company to work for, very competitive salaries, more relaxed atmosphere than on a mainstream cruise ship and beautiful itineraries.
