Compagnie du Ponant Cruises was established in 1998 by Philippe Videau, Jean-Emmanuel Sauvé, and other officers of the French Merchant Navy. The company started with just one vessel (Le Ponant) and has slowly grown over the years. in 1999, the company acquired Le Levant, a yacht type of cruise ship. in 2019 Le Levant was purchased by Paul Gauguin Cruises and became Tere Moana. In 2004, Ponant purchased Le Diamant, a luxury liner. Le Diamant transferred to Quark Expeditions in 2019 to becoome Ocean Diamond.

Later, in 2010, Ponant put into service the first of a series of four identical luxury sister ships, Le Boreal. A year later, the company began operating the second ship of the class, L'Austral and in 2019 the third ship of the class was added to the fleet, Le Soléal. The fourth ship of the class joined the fleet in 2015.Currently Compagnie du Ponant Yacht Cruises and Expeditions operates a fleet of five small cruise ships (yachts); Le Ponant, Le Boreal, L' Austral, Le Soléal and Le Lyrial. The Le Ponant has 32 fully equipped cabins and sails under the French Flag. It has crew of thirty people. There is a terrace lounge, a large lounge, dining rooms and a nightclub. The Le Levant has 45 fully equipped outside cabins, with two bars, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a large lounge and a boutique. It also sails under the French flag and has a crew of 55 members. All the yachts are equipped with telephone and satellite equipment.

The ships visit usually inaccessible by larger vessels places and ports. Destinations covered by Compagnie du Ponant Cruises are from the Adriatic to the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Aegean Sea, Indian Ocean/Red Sea, South America and Antarctica, Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland.
